Groupe précurseur du hardcore californien, les Bad Brains avaient plusieurs caractéristiques déconcertantes : ils étaient noirs et rastas, enchaînaient sans prévenir des morceaux de hardcore joués à une vitesse supersonique (Joshua's Song, qui dure trente secondes) avec des reggae traditionnels (I And I Survive), tandis que leur guitariste avait fait ses armes dans des groupes de fusion jazz rock. Sur scène, les dreadlocks généraient les plus furieux pogos avant que les punks, exténués ne se retrouvent bercés par quelque prière adressée à Jah... et soient finalement brutalement réveillés par un un solo heavy métal. « Rock For Light », paru en 1982, et produit par Ric Ocasek des Cars, est l'album le plus représentatif de la diversité du groupe, avant que celui-ci ne subisse de sérieux changements, certains membres se consacrant au reggae, d'autres se dirigeant vers le métal.
