Comme l'ont déjà prouvé Nick Cave et Kylie Minogue dans une veine assez similaire, marier l'eau et le feu ne donne pas toujours de la fumée. Dans le cas présent, la collaboration entre Isobel Campbell, la meilleure chose qui soit arrivée à Belle & Sebastian, et Mark Lanegan de Queen Of The Stone Age, a engendré une douzaine de chansons folk et bluesy, tendance alternative, de premier choix. Dès leur premier single, une reprise de Ramblin' Man de Hank Williams, on a compris que Campbell et Lanegan misaient sur l'opposition de leur style vocal. Les autres titres de Ballad Of The Broken Seas tirent également profit de la juxtaposition du timbre doux et aérien d'Isobel et de celui, plus rugueux, de son compagnon de fortune.
Niveau arrangements, on baigne en plein trip-folk, avec de nombreuses allusions à Ennio Morricone (flagrantes dans The False Husband) et des cordes divines arrangées par Paul Leonard Morgan, un homme de main de Craig Armstrong (Honey Child What Can I Do?).
