Un goût certain pour le Grand-Guignol et la provocation permanente n'empêche pas d'avoir du talent... et de l'humour. Ce deuxième album de Marilyn Manson (après Portrait Of An American Family et le EP Smells Like Children) le démontre superbement. Produit par Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) et Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy), ce qui s'entend, Antichrist Superstar truffe son metal de références indus ("Dried Up, Tied...", "Mister Superstar"), new wave ("Deformography"), gothique pompier ("Beautiful People") et de trouvailles décalées ("Cryptorchid" ressemble par moments à du Kraftwerk sous hélium). Brian Warner chante ses "hymnes à la haine" d'une voix grave de crooner déjanté ayant abusé des rediffusions de L'Exorciste. Et gagne son pari : l'Amérique a adoré son disque... autant qu'elle déteste son groupe.
